U16 Jr. Hawks Win SWYHL Championship in Dramatic Fashion

PJH traveled to Provo, Utah for the Southwest Youth Hockey League's championship weekend January, 18 through the 21st. The Hawks got off to a fast start beating the host team from Utah 11-2. Next up for the Hawks were the Phoenix Polar Bears and Portland took care of them 6-3. The Hawks played Puget Sound next and they began to really play well, beating the improved Tomahawks 6-0. Portland ended round robin play against The Las Vegas Ice Cats wining 7-2. After round robin play the Hawks grabbed the first seed with the Jets 2, Boise 3 and Las Vegas 4. Portland lined up in it's semi against Las Vegas and won 6-3. Next up were Portland's arch rivals, the Boise Steelheads who knocked off the Vacaville Jets 5-4 in the other semi-final. The Hawks came out blazing and carried play most of the way. Brandon Haase came up huge stopping a penalty shot but the Steelheads scored on a break away to take a 1 - 0 with only 6 minutes left in the game. The Hawks responded, tying the game with a scant three minutes left and they ended it at 5:42 of sudden death overtime when Chris Seybold scored on a 3-1 rush. The overtime thriller was the 16th win in a row for the Hawks who improved to 36-10- 4.
