Bantam B Jr. Hawks Win President's Day Championship in Phoenix

February 26, 2008

The PJH Bantam B team traveled to Phoenix to play in a President’s Day Tournament and comes home Champions!

The Hawks, in their first game faced the Tri-Valley Blue Devils, the team that had knocked the Hawks out of the Silver Stick’s semi-finals in San Jose. The Hawks got their redemption by beating up the Blue Devils 4-0! The next game was against the Hyland Hills Jaguars from Denver, Colorado. This was a penalty filled slug fest with Hyland Hills racking up 78 penalty minutes, 4 players ejected, including one for the tournament and 2 coaches, one ejected and suspended for the next game. The Hawks totally dominated the play racking up 8 goals and only allowing 1 and out shooting them 40-14. The 3rd round robin game was against the Vancouver BC Hollyburn Huskies, this was the toughest game so far. Hollyburn came out hard and fast, and controlled the game tempo. Unfortunately, the previous games and the long travel, caught up with the Hawks, they were a step behind the entire game. The final score was Hollyburn 2, PJH 0.

The Hawks, in second place from Pool A, went onto the semi-finals to face the 1st place team from Pool B, the Front Range Panthers from Colorado. Apparently over their jet lag and ready to play more hockey, it was total domination by the Hawks! The Hawks scored 3 goals in the first period, another 3 goals in the second period and one more in the 3rd. Front Range had no answer to the attack of Portland, shots were 31-15!

With the semi-final win, the Hawks headed to the Championship game, a re-match against Hollyburn. It was a high energy, well played, hard fought game, with neither team letting up! At the end of regulation play, the score remained tied at 0-0, it was on to overtime. Each team stepped up their game, trying to eliminate the other. With time running out, the Hawks were pinned in their defensive zone and the Huskies pounding them hard. The Hawks got a break, when one of our players were checked hard on the boards, opening a gate and stopping play. The Hawks were able to put out a fresh line. They won the face-off, sending the puck back to the defenseman. The defenseman chipped the puck up to the breaking forwards, creating a 3 on 2 breakaway. One winger drove hard outside and took a shot, the Hollyburn goalie made a save, but left the rebound. The Hawk’s trailing forward took control of the puck, and shot it into the upper net scoring with only 6 seconds left!

It was a great tournament for the Hawks! A record of 4 and 1, scoring 20 goals and only having 3 scored on them, earning 3 shut-outs, not leading in penalty minutes and a goalie save percentage of 96.9!

Up was a team from Denver CO, the Hyland Hills Jaguars. This was a penalty filled slug fest, Hyland Hills racked up 78 minutes in penalties, and another suspended for their next game. The Hawks totally dominated the play racking up 8 goals and only allowing 1 and out shooting them 40-14. The 3rd round robin game was against the Vancouver BC Hollyburn Huskies, this was definitely going to be the Hawks toughest game yet. Hollyburn came out hard and fast, which controlled the game tempo. Unfortunately, all the hockey and travel had caught up with the Hawks, we were a step behind Hollyburn all game. The final score, was Hollyburn 2, PJH 0. The Hawks went on to the semi-finals to face Pool B 1# team Front Range from CO. It was total domination be the Hawks, they appearently got over their jet lag. The Hawks scored 3 goals in the 1st, another 3 goals in the 2nd and added one more in the 3rd. Front Range had no answer to the attack of Portland, shots were 31-15.

On to the Championship game and it would be a re-match between Hollyburn and the Hawks. It was a classic knockdown/drag out fight with neither team letting up. After 3 periods of hockey the scored remained tied at 0-0, it’s on to overtime. Each team stepped their game up trying to eliminate the other. With time running out the Hawks were pinned in their D-zone and the Huskies were pounding them hard. Hawks got a break when one of the TJ Moran was check hard on the broads and opened a gate stopping play.
