September 19, 2010 was a remarkable day for youth hockey in Portland. The Portland Jr. Hawks Fall Development Program program took to the beautiful new ice at the Winterhawks Skating Center under the watchful eyes of renowned skills Coach Ben Stadey and our terrific cadre of PJH coaches....you could feel the energy in the rink from 7:00am when the first mini-mite stepped on until 8:15pm when the last Midget stepped off. All our Rep teams begin practice this week and are looking forward to their first games. HOCKEY IS BACK!

Winterhawks Skating Center Update
POSTED - September 12th, 2010
The Winterhawks Skating Center (formerly Valley Ice Arena) is taking shape, with the rink itself nearing completion and significant updating and remodeling being done in the lobby area. Though we originally hoped to be on the ice on September 11th, PJH is working closely with the Winterhawks and we agreed that pushing our Fall Development season back one week made sense to allow the contractor to focus on the many tasks at hand and not to slow work down. The Winterhawks Skating Center (WSC) will be a tremendous facility and one the Jr. Hawks can truly feel proud to call home. These are exciting times for youth hockey in the Portland area!
Portland Jr. Hawk parent Mindy Burke has been appointed to the PJH Board of Directors, and will fill the Fundraising & Sponsorship Director position recently vacated by Phil Hatch. Many thanks to Mindy for stepping into this critical role that will help grow youth hockey in the Portland area. Mindy can be contacted at fundraising@portlandjrhawks.org.

Hello everyone! We had a good turnout at the PJH General meeting on Monday, June 14th at the Oregon Sports Offices. We reviewed details of the 2010-11 Tier/Rep program, discussed the new House season split into the Fall Development Program (FDP) and the Winter House League, and talked about the future of youth hockey in the Portland area. Several members had excellent questions regarding program details and organizational philosophy - it was heartening to see so many interested parents in the room. Registration for the 2010-11 season is NOW OPEN, so please don't delay in getting signed up for what is sure to be another great year of Portland Jr. Hawks hockey!
The biggest news of the night was presented by Portland Winterhawks' President Doug Piper, who announced that the Winterhawks are moving forward with the purchase of Valley Ice Arena and that they hope to close the deal by early July. PJH has worked closely with the Winterhawks as they have considered this move, and we are VERY excited by what this change holds in store for our organization as we partner with the Winterhawks to grow the sport of ice hockey. We plan to assist the Winterhawks in the rink transition, and will announce plans for a "work party weekend" at Valley to help make it shine brighter than ever. PJH parent Jill Boeschenstein has graciously agreed to coordinate this volunteer effort, and you will hear more details as the timeline is finalized. I also want to extend many thanks to John McBride for everything he has done for hockey in the Portland area during his tenure at Valley, and we wish him the best. We will also continue to work with Sherwood Ice Arena and Mt. View Ice Arena to give you the best youth hockey program we possibly can.
Don't forget to sign up for the many excellent camps in the Portland area this summer in addition to submitting your PJH registration. Best wishes to all for a great summer - hopefully it will STOP RAINING sometime in the near future.
Regards,
Tom O'Connor, President
